Mastering the Art of Ginseng Farming
Panax quinquefolius thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers a shady environment. Ideal conditions are found in sandy loam soils that are rich in natural nutrients.
Cultivating and harvesting Panax quinquefolius is challenging, requiring either special digging tools or careful handpicking to avoid damaging the delicate roots. After harvesting, the roots are gently washed—careful not to overwash or break them—then chilled for 4-6 weeks. Following refrigeration, they undergo a slow heating and drying process over three weeks, a method that preserves the root’s medicinal qualities, maintains its suppleness, and enhances its appearance.
An optimal yield ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 pounds per acre, with roots typically taking 3-5 years to achieve a marketable size and value.
